Sweet Fall (Sweet Home, #3)
by Tillie Cole
Book 3 in the Sweet Home series.
Having read the first 2 books in the series, and of course being a huge Tillie Cole fan, I looked forward to getting stuck into this book. What I didn't expect was the emotional impact it would have on me. Before you think about 1-clicking Sweet Fall, I advise you above anything else to stockpile the tissues.
Lexington Hart - Friend, daughter, cheerleader and goth. Happy go lucky with a smile always plastered across her heavily made-up face, this is her journey and it is one hell of an emotional one. Add in Austin Carillo, the tattooed, wide receiver and all around Italian bad boy of the Crimson Tide and you have the makings of an epic love story.
I think having read the previous 2 books, as a reader I knew that Lexi and Austin had a thing. Books 1 & 2 focus very much on Molly and Rome though, so they were just passengers along for the ride in them. We knew very little about them, but this book delves into their lives, where they come from and the secrets and demons they hide from those closest to them.
I am going off my usually format of a review here as I don't want to give too much away. The beauty of this story is although from the synopsis you know they have secrets, you can't imagine the seriousness of them. I'm not sure if that was a purposeful intention from Ms Cole, but hell, it makes the content so much more powerful to read.
These 2 characters are chalk and cheese. Lexi is from a affluent family and should have the world at her feet, whereas Austin is from the ghetto's and has done things that haunt him and that made him believe he would never escape the hell that was his "famiglia". They shouldn't work, but in each other they find salvation, they find support and they find themselves.
Once again, Tillie has tackled not just one sensitive subject matter but in this book a whole plethora. But unlike her other books, this time Tillie has used her own experiences. It is important to read the foreword in this book. Tillie talks very eloquently about her very personal struggles and once read, you know this book truly comes from her heart. With the subject matters she deals with, you feel her emotions and I applaud her for the guts it must have took to expose her personal battles on such a public platform.
I am not a crying reader, for want of a better word. Very few books have the ability to effect me so deeply that I am brought to tears. Sweet Fall is one of those books though. The struggles that not just Lexi has, but also those faced by Austin, broke my heart. You will need your big girl panties and plenty of tissues, but it is worth every single tear shed.
Tillie uses a quote in her foreword that having now read the book, fits it so perfectly:
"If we knew each other's secrets, what comforts we should find" - John Churton Collins
This is yet again another MUST READ, beautifully poignant, Tillie Cole book. Its message is one of hope to those wallowing in the abyss and it is very much deserving of my 5 Crowns
Emma - 5 Crowns
We all have secrets.
Secrets well buried.
Until we find the one soul who makes the burden of such secrets just that little bit easier to bear.
Lexington "Lexi" Hart is a senior at the University of Alabama. Surrounded by her best friends, her loving family and having fulfilled her life-long dream of making the Crimson Tide cheer squad, everything is going exactly as she always dreamed it would. But beneath her happy exterior, demons lurk, threatening to jeopardize everything Lexi has worked to achieve. When events in her life become too much to cope with, Lexi finds herself spiraling down into the realm of her biggest fear. Lexi falls hard, victim once again to the only thing that can destroy her and, on the way, finds herself falling straight into the dangerous tattooed arms of a guy from the wrong side of the tracks.
Austin Carillo, starting Wide Receiver for the Alabama Crimson Tide, must get picked in this year's NFL draft. He needs it. His brothers need it. Most importantly, his mother desperately needs it. Brought up in a world where the poor are forgotten, the sick are left to fend for themselves and no hero miraculously appears to pull you out of hell, Austin had no other choice but to make a living on the wrong side of the law—until football offered Austin the break to get his life back on track. But when a family tragedy drags him back into the clutches of the gang he believed he had left far behind, Austin finds himself falling. Falling back into criminal ways and falling deep into a suffocating darkness. Until a troubled yet kindred spirit stumbles across his path, where Austin quickly finds he is falling for a young woman, a young woman who might just have the power to save him from his worst enemy: himself.
Can two troubled souls find a lasting peace together? Or will they finally succumb to the demons threatening to destroy them?
