Spirits of Christmas: A Rock’n’Roll Christmas Carol

At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.

Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?

Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.

‘Hiya, Jude!’

The voice emerged from the door, and Jude’s head whipped round as if drawn by a string.

‘Hiya, Jude,’ the voice repeated cheerfully. Unexpectedly, it launched into the first line of one of Jude’s most favourite songs. Jude once again sank onto the bed, his legs refusing to carry him with the shock of this second apparition.

‘Is this really you?’

For a moment, Jude’s second otherworldly visitor abandoned his song and remained silent, motionless, allowing Jude to take a good, long look. The sideburns, the nose, the defined chin, the round glasses were clearly visible despite the spirit’s transparent appearance. Everything about this figure was familiar, yet nothing was quite as it should have been. It was as though Jude was looking at a hologram, a distorted, stretched vision where nothing quite fitted together.

Nonetheless, Jude found his voice. ‘Oh my God, it is you!’

Excitement made his exclamation strong and clear. The figure flinched at the sudden burst of noise, but Jude ploughed on. ‘This is…this is totally unreal. I mean, imagine this—here’s me in my bedroom, and there’s you, come to visit me.’

‘I’m not who you think you see,’ the apparition interrupted. ‘I’m the Ghost of Christmas Past.’

A creative and nostalgic festive read laden with musical undertones. Nicky Wells has succeeded in putting a unique spin on a classic favourite with an integrity all of her own...

This is the best adaptation of A Christmas Carol, EVER! - Kelly, Perusing Princesses Blog.

In this new rendition of a family classic, we follow the story of Jude Shaw, the lead singer behind British platinum selling rock band, ‘The Blood Roses’.

Since the success of their first album, Jude, Darren, Rob and Tom have noticed a slow decline in their popularity. With frustration and testosterone running high in the camp, Jude, the front man and the voice is feeling the pressure; although his incessant rants and possessive control over song writing is starting to create some serious waves in the group. Tensions at an all-time high, their latest show at a local pub in London proves to be their last when it turns into every musician’s nightmare, where for the first time in their career they get booed off-stage.

Jude is done. The band are over and he wants nothing more than to go back home to his Girlfriend, Carrie. However, he doesn’t expect to find all of her things gone, his flat barren and cold - just like his heart.

Jude has finally hit rock bottom. He is angry at the world and with no reprieve in sight, he delves into his fridge to consume one (or six) cans of beer before passing out on his bed. Oh... and all this happens the day before Christmas Eve!

Awoken by a bright light, Jude is amazed to see a ‘rock n roll’ legend sitting by his bed, although...this ethereal presence isn’t here to sing him a classic oldie, he is here to deliver a very important message. Three ghosts with three very different incentives are going to pay him a visit tonight and Jude is about to get spoon-fed a bout of harsh reality.

Can one-night turn it all around for Jude, or is this the end of the road for the fallen rock star?

The Spirits of Christmas focuses strongly on one man and his steep decline to self-destructive desolation. How one man lost his way and in the process destroyed everything that he once held dear. It is a little dark in places which maintained the credibility of this well thought-out story. Lets be honest, ghosts are scary, especially your own! To see one’s life and many mistakes through a looking glass is a bitter pill to swallow. Yet, to be given that second chance at turning it around is a strong message of hope and I felt that while reading this novella. It may only take a few hours to read, but I enjoyed every second.

This will certainly get you into the Christmas Spirit - pun intended!

Word of advice: Read with a glass of eggnog in front of a crackling fire for the full 3D effect. You won’t regret it! ;)
