Silver Bastard (Silver Valley, #1)

by Joanna Wylde

Book 1 in the new Silver Valley series

Before I start my review, I need to admit that I went into this book pretty blind. All I saw was the cover and the fact that it was written by Joanna Whylde, MC author extraordinaire. I was excited but a little apprehensive if I'm being honest. I LOVE the Reapers MC series, but when I saw the cover for Silver Bastard, I will admit that my first thought was - Why is she doing another MC series? Then I read the author's note at the beginning of the book.(You must read this!) This isn't in fact a MC series, but a series centred around the area of Silver Valley, Idaho. This particular book features the Silver Bastards MC and indeed the Reaper's, BUT this book is so much more than that - I LOVED it!!

We were first introduced to Puck, Silver Bastards MC prospect at the end of Reaper's Stand. Having spent the last 14 months incarcerated alongside Painter of the Reaper's MC - Puck is now free and wanting to make up for lost time. Handed his top rocker on his release, they head to a affiliated MC, the Longnecks before the long drive back to Callup, Idaho. Partying and sex is top of the list and neither are in short supply. When a pretty little thing catches his eye, he soon finds himself fixed up with her for the night by a Longnecks hangaround, Teeny. It isn't until the next morning that he realises he may have just made the biggest mistake of his life.

Becca hates bikers and all they stand for. Forced to endure there constant wandering hands, and worse, forced to have sex with them by her Stepfather Teeny. When once again she is pimped out to a biker, she knows she has no choice but to go along with it. But this biker is different. For the first time, he makes it enjoyable for her and she is confidant that he will tell Teeny he was happy with her. However, she is in for a shock when the morning brings about massive changes, taking her life in a direction she never dreamed of.

21 year Puck didn't know that Becca is just 16 and when he then finds Teeny beating on her - he worries not just about his freedom, but about the young girl that he has had unlawful sex with. To save her life and his skin, Puck and the Bastards take her with them and offer her their protection. But 5 years on, will she still need that protection from Teeny? Or will it be her heart that needs protecting from her dark saviour, Puck?

So as I've already said - Yes, this book is set around bikers, but the focus is very much on Becca and Puck as individuals and the politics and history of the Silver Valley. It's a story of a young woman's desire to make a life for herself; leaving the memories and horrors of the past behind. I have to say she makes a real great effort to do so, until Puck makes his presence known in her life again. She fights him and the attraction that is unwanted but impossible to ignore. On the flip side, Puck struggles with the desire he has for her and the guilt he has about his actions 5 years ago. He is such a cool, arrogant and impossibly difficult character, but man, you can understand why he makes Becca's heart race. You will also get to learn about the history of Callup and the Silver Valley, as well as some of its residents. In particular the Irish mobster's that have their own foothold within the mining community in the area.

As with every book i've read of Joanna's, her attention to detail and the obvious research she puts into her books adds a genuine sincerity to the story. It is atmospheric and you can tell these are real places and reflections of the real people that live in them. It just feels so real and unlike so many of her contemporaries, her books never feel churned out.

I loved the storyline and look forward to not just the books to come in this series, (I'm thinking of a certain Irish heir) but also Painter's book from the Reaper's series. Joanna's writing is so clever, she is always two steps ahead; having you invested in the book your reading whilst chomping at the bit for the books to come.

Another must read book and new series. Thank-you Joanna, you never let me down - One of my automatic 1-click authors.

First in the new Silver Valley series from the New York Timesbestselling author of the Reapers Motorcycle Club Novels

Fourteen months. For fourteen months, Puck Redhouse sat in a cell and kept his mouth shut, protecting the Silver Bastards MC from their enemies. Then he was free and it was time for his reward—full membership in the club, along with a party to celebrate. That’s when he saw Becca Jones for the first time and set everything in motion. Before the night ended he’d violated his parole and stolen her away from everything she knew.

Five years. It was five years ago that Puck destroyed Becca and saved her all in one night. She’s been terrified of him ever since, but she’s even more terrified of the monsters he still protects her from... But Becca refuses to let fear control her. She’s living her life and moving forward, until she gets a phone call from the past she can't ignore. She has to go back, and there’s only one man she can trust to go with her—the ex-con biker who rescued her once before.

Puck will help her again, but this time it’ll be on his terms. No more lies, no more tears, and no more holding back what he really wants...
