RAW by Belle Aurora
Growing up the way I did, you’d think I’d be more screwed up than what I actually am.
Soon as I turned sixteen, I left that bump in the road I called home and took my chances on the street.
Best decision I ever made.
Now, at the age of twenty six, I’m educated, employed and damn good at my job.
My friends have become my family. Like me, they know what it’s like to grow up unloved.
But the saying is true.
The world makes way for those who know where they are going.
I know where I’m going and I’ll get there eventually. On my own terms and at my own pace.
But then there’s him.
I feel his eyes on me. I see him hiding in plain sight. He watches me.
He makes me feel.
But it’s real.
I’m sure you’re wondering how a person falls in love with their stalker.
So am I.
This isn’t a story.
This is my life.

Raw is the perfect title for this story because it is raw and dark and gritty and imperfect just like the characters themselves. I love a tortured anti-hero and in true form, Twitch delivered! He is one screwed up sociopath whose mission in life is to get what he wants by any means necessary. A tormented and broken boy turned multi-millionaire business owner / smokescreen villain, he is revered and feared by all who cross his path - oh and he's hot too, with tattoos - A winning recipe in my book! ;)
Our heroine, Alexa, is the polar opposite in personality, yet her past resonates strongly with that of her stalker, as she gets up close and personal to the man who watches her every move. As a caseworker used to dealing with youth from broken backgrounds, she has hardened to the idea of intimidation - maybe that's what made her so brave as to invite him into her home. The beautiful man in the black hoodie that has been watching her from the shadows for months. Little does she know, she's about to become a new toy, a pawn in a game of twisted retribution.
Damn, this storyline was good. Really good! And yet I felt myself getting whiplash with some of the scene structures that were put in place. Don't get me wrong, the writing was of worthy calibre but the flow in parts felt rushed and fell a little flat in places. I couldn't seem to connect to any of the secondary characters, bar one.
I just read a series with the term 'sparrow' for broken women too, so it threw me a little seeing it used here as well. So yes... I picked up on some similarities from other books but I won't base or judge my review on that as I'm putting it down to coincidence because Twitch and Lexi' s story held my attention from the get go. The prologue was profound and heart breaking, a total clincher that had me flipping the pages with relish.
Twitch... I enjoyed his earlier scenes, the secrecy cloaking his character along with that hood had me gripped, then it changed and it took me a little while to adjust to the idea. No doubt about it though, he is an manipulative rat bastard and he put me through those many emotional layers, which is something I crave in every book I read, so it was sweet just-desserts when his ideals started to gradually change, knocking the wind out of his sails. It was in these moments my affections for him strengthened.
Raw is a dark, profound, suspenseful read with a few pleasant surprises. Like Twitch, it's hard to put a label on it, so I'm just gonna go with... Read It!
