Book 2 in the Death Dwellers MC series by Kathryn Kelly.
This is very much a continuation of the two previous books and I would highly recommend reading them before embarking on this story.
So we have finally come to Johnnie's story...YAY!! Loved Johnnie in the previous books and was eager to learn more about him, and boy do you!
Johnnie/John Boy is Christopher's/Outlaw's cousin. Whereas Christopher was treated very poorly by their Grandfather, Johnnie was very much put on a pedestal. This obviously affected their close relationship, with Outlaw being taking under Big Joe's wing and Johnnie very much expected to follow the college business path. He however overhears things growing up and is warned off being close to Outlaw but is determined to keep the close relationship they have.
When something happens to Johnnie it is Outlaw he calls and it is Outlaw who protects him and so his life is integrated into the MC....Following on from the previous book, John boy is back in the club as VP after taking time away to run one of the legitimate business ventures. He is overseeing the club whilst Outlaw and Megan are on there honeymoon. As we know Johnnie has deep feelings for Megan following a brief and somewhat innocent connection with her during a time when Outlaw left her under his protection. He lost out on her due to the fact that she is deeply in love with Christopher, however she does still have feelings for Johnnie but isn't in love with him as he is her. Johnnie struggles with this, struggles with the fact that in his mind once again Christopher was picked over him but also with the guilt of knowing that Christopher is happy and that is all he has ever wanted for him.
Enter Kendall. Kendall is the ex girlfriend of a rival MC club and a lawyer. We met her in the previous book when she was sent to the club to seduce Outlaw. That didn't work and she ended up in John Boy's bed. She has never forgotton her biker and it seems she isn't lighly to, given he left her with a reminder of the night. She is secretly pregnant, and is being pressured into infiltrating the club by her ex to get information that will end the Death Dwellers MC and in particular Outlaw.
They have taken her underage sister, Caroline and are holding her as a sex slave and unless Kendall can come up with the goods, she will be sold to the highest bidder. Life couldn't get any worse for Kendall, that is until her mother takes her own life in front of her when she tells her that Caroline is missing; Kendall's life has changed forever and she will never be the same again.
She does the only thing she can now do to save her sister. She sets out to gain insider knowledge and applies for the club lawyer position, potentially betraying the father of her unborn child.
Johnnie however wasn't born yesterday and is suspicious of Kendall from the beginning. He is very much attracted to her, but can she break down Johnnie's walls and get rid of the ghost of Megan that still remains in his heart? And the biggest question remains; who is out to destroy Outlaw and The Death Dwellers MC? And what secrets and lies will be uncovered in the pursuit of the forces working against them?
I wasn't disappointed in Johnnie at all, he was a true Alpha biker and I LOVED him. He is however a lot darker than the previous books have alluded to. He struggles with his relationship with Christopher and I believe this stems from his intense love for him but also his bitter resentment as well. He is a man that struggles to give and receive affection and unfortunately combined with the feelings his still harbours for Megan this has truly fucked him up. He will piss you off at times... but he is a truly tortured soul.
Kendall is a pretty strong character, she is obviously caught up in everyone's worst nightmare and her decision making reflects this. At times I wanted to shout "grow a pair" and you want her to fight against Johnnie's dominance in there relationship; I'm not sure she ever quite gets there in this book.
This isn't a sunshine and flowers HEA, if you want that in a book this isn't the story for you. This is the story of a couple struggling with there own darkness and attraction to each other and trying to move forward for the future of their baby biker. There is death (we lose a much loved character) and violence, so if you like your stories full of angst, action and grit like me, you will love it.
I would also add at this point that the series that Kathryn has created is very much that. As I have previously mentioned this is very much a continuation of the 1st 2 books and the storyline for Johnnie, Kendall or indeed the other characters doesn't end with their book. The Storyline is very fluid and I anticipate it flowing very much into the next instalment. I very much expect to be hearing more from Johnnie and Kendall and look forward to watching their relationship grow stronger and hopefully flourish in the upcoming books Kathryn has planned.
Another fantastic instalment of MC life Death Dwellers style. If you are a fan of Madeline Sheehan or Joanna Wylde, this series is a must read!
