Kyland

by Mia Sheridan

Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY TAURUS. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

This is part of the series - A Sign Of Love Novels. This book is inspired by the legend of Taurus and is a standalone story.

This instalment is set in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. A mining community that was rocked by the worst mining accident in fifty years; an explosion which killed many of Dennville's residents. An already struggling community has found itself thrown even further into poverty; with many residents struggling to keep warm and feed themselves and their families.

Tenleigh Falyn lives with her older sister and her mentally unstable mother in a shabby trailer in the poorest part of town. Both her and Marlo her sister have jobs that earn a little to keep the family reasonably warm and fed but most of their money goes towards the medication needed to keep their mum from having her episodes. Tenleigh dreams of leaving the poverty of the Kentucky Hills behind and winning the scholarship that the local coal mining company awards to one student each year. She dedicates her time to study and reading books form the shack of a library that she helped to set up for the community.

Kyland Barrett lost both his father and older brother to the explosion that rocked the grim community that he exists in. He is starving most of the time and messing around with girls the other half. Kyland is however determined to escape the path that many of his peers will be stuck on. He is bright and he knows that he will win the scholarship and live in New York City; making something of himself and leaving this miserable life behind.

What neither Tenleigh and Kyland count on is falling in love. Who will win the coveted scholarship? and when its time to leave, will they be able to walk away from each other?

I love how Mia comes up with such different stories for each book in this collection. This is such an emotionally charged read. Mia's writing as always is amazing. She has such a talent for painting a picture and creating characters that you are able to connect with. I always find her books so atmospheric and Kyland is no different. The atmosphere of poverty is tangible and you feel the sadness and desperation that the main protagonists are experiencing.

This is in essence a story of survival; of dreams and aspirations. A story of deep love and selflessness; of deception and deceit; a love discovered in the depths of despair.

Was it my favourite Mia Sheridan book? in all honesty... no. That doesn't mean it isn't still a beautifully written book. I loved a lot about the book but it just lacked a bit of drama for me. I think the backdrop doesn't help as these two characters truly are living in dire circumstances. It is however heart warming and it certainly makes you thankful for everything that you have. This is a story set in modern day U.S.A and unfortunately is the reality of many living in one of the richest countries in the world. This makes this story all the more heartbreaking.

For all you Mia Sheridan fan, you will love this new addition to her wonderful collection of stories based on the legends of the horoscope. Another enjoyable if not heartbreaking depiction of love in the 21st century.
