Kaleidoscope Hearts (Hearts, #1)
By Claire Contreras
He was my older brother's best friend.
He was never supposed to be mine.
I thought we would get it out of our system and move on.
One of us did.
One of us left.
Now he’s back, looking at me like he wants to devour me. And all those feelings I’d turned into anger are brewing into something else, something that terrifies me.
He broke my heart last time.
This time he'll obliterate it.
This is a standalone.

Book 1 in the Hearts series.
Estelle is trying to move on. Having spent the last year mourning the tragic death of her fiancée Wyatt, she now feels ready to take the next step in resuming her life. Putting the home they shared up for sale, she is moving in with her older brother Victor and is thinking about tentatively dating as well. But life has a way of sending you curve balls, and hers comes in the form of the very handsome and very commitment phobic, Doctor Oliver Hart; first love, the older brothers best friend and the man that shattered her young heart.
Can the memories of Wyatt clear enough to give her another shot at love? Can she entrust her heart to a man that broke it every time she gave it to him? But most importantly will history repeat itself, leaving her broken from not just 1 loss but 2?
What a surprise this book was. If like me you have read Claire Contreras's Darkness series, you may expect a slightly darker read; let me tell you now that this book isn't anything like them. I like many enjoyed that series, but I didn't love it; it was a little darker and the subject matter deeper than I tend to really love. This book however is perfection for me. It had the perfect balance of romance, steam, angst and a male protagonist who will give you butterflies and make you swoon.
Poor old Elle, she has had a tough few years. The push and pull of her first love left her in tatters. Wyatt came into her life and picked her up. Her friends and family weren't huge fans, but he mended the broken heart he found her with. So when she lost him, it broke her heart just that little bit more. Having pretty much avoided Oliver for the duration of her and Wyatt's relationship, he is now back on the scene. He makes his intentions clear and he is determined to win Elle over. I just loved him. Yes, he has had his shittier moments, but these were misguided mistakes and you will feel for both of them and the years they lost together. The fact that this book has flash backs to the past, and that they are mostly from Oliver's POV, means you get every single emotion of the why's and why-nots of Oliver's stupid arse thought processes. It is a journey of discovering love, loss, hurt and moving on. It is heart warming and just bloody fab!
I now look forward to Paper Hearts. This will be Mia and Jenson's story. The fact that I get to revisit this group of friends is great. The fact that the questions I have about these 2 particular characters are to be answered leaves me just aching with anticipation.
A absolute must read for fans of true contemporary romance and those who enjoy a genuinely beautiful second chance romance read.
