by Portia Moore

Synopsis

This is not your typical happily ever after...

Lauren Brooks wants to do three things: Escape the small town she grew
up in, get accepted to her dream school in Chicago, and graduate
without drowning in debt. Now she’s working her ass off to do just
that.

With a full course load and a waitressing job at one of the hottest
night clubs in Chicago, she does not have time for distractions;namely
ones who only want to get into her pants. She’s been burned before.
Only a fool goes for a second round.. With just two semesters left
until graduation, everything’s on track.

Until she meets Cal. Enter distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, deep grey eyes, and a smile that
could only hide an agenda, she knows he’s trouble. And for the first
time in her life, a little trouble might be just what she needs.

No what she wants.

It isn't like she’d ever marry the guy.
Until she does.

What she thinks will be her happily ever after, is only the beginning.
Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and
being his wife cost more than she bargained for.

Book 1 in the If I Break series.

Lauren Scott is lonely, broken hearted and very bitter. Having grown fed up with her husband Cal's treatment of her and their marriage she announces that she is leaving him, after he arrives home following yet another absence. Callously dismissing Lauren as being drunk, he swiftly uses his tactic of silencing her with his body, knowing that she loves him, is addicted to him and as usual she is powerless to his charm.

This is Lauren and Cal's journey. From their first meeting to 3 years later and the seemingly confusing breakdown of their loving marriage. It is an emotional journey told in both the past and present. It is a story of 2 people who adore each other, who will lay their lives down for each other. One character naive in love, the other manipulative, and through all this a huge secret hangs over their heads and it will forever rule the relationship they have and shatter the love and trust they have in each other.

I literally stumbled across this book. I was searching for another and this came up as a freebie. I read the synopsis and liked the sound of it. I have read many free books and often they are free for a reason... not this one!!

I struggled with how I could even attempt to review If I Break. The most amazing thing about this book are the secrets held within it. So how to review it without letting slip its genius? Well I certainly can't give any further overview of the story because you need to go in blind as I did. I can however tell you that this story is unlike any I have read before. The storyline is just brilliant and the angst builds and builds until you reach the end and BANG!! you will be left in utter shock at the tale this brilliant new author has taken you on.

The character of Lauren is a brilliant one. A bright student with dreams, she is very in-experienced when it comes to men and doesn't trust easily. Cal is a business man, cocky, arrogant and super cool - he sweeps her off her feet and they fall in deep love. I liked Cal, you never doubt how much he loves Lauren even if you have questions, but he does rail road her with his dominate personality. He keeps himself locked up, Lauren knows practically nothing about him BUT love overrides sense and they are so in love; Lauren loses her head along with her heart.

I usually hate stories told in the past and present but this so works. It is important that we see how and why they are where they are, how the cracks appeared or if Cal's secrets meant the cracks were always there. By the end of this book, you will be desperate to find out more... I was!!

This is Portia Moore's début and it is superb. Yes there are some edit issues but the strength of the storytelling and characterisation means I can overlook all of that.

This is by far the best freebie I have ever read and I am so pleased that I came across it. It's unique and it will leave you in shock. I just want to shout from the rooftops - YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!
