Hat Trick (Black Jack Gentleman, #4)
by Liz Crowe
Book 4 in the soccer based Black Jack Gentleman series and a spin off from the Stewart Realty series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but I wholeheartedly recommend you read the whole series as each book is a fantastic read and is so different to the last .
Emily Keller enjoys her role in the BJG PR department. Having started her career in banking, her goals and aspirations soon took a back seat when she married her successful husband Marcus and became a mother. She loves her husband, but she also isn't stupid. Her marriage isn't working, but her husband despite his faults, provides for her every need and adores his daughter. Her job is the escapism she needs and it ensures she is able to continue taking the rough with the smooth in her personal life.
Declan MacGuire has left his successful soccer career in the U.K behind and started a new one with the BJG. Having left under a cloud he is keen to forget about the fiancée that he lost and really make a go of it in Detroit. He is willing to work hard and tackle his personal issues head on, in particular his temper and anger issues. Things start well for him and his game couldn't be better, now he hopes that his personal life can fall in line too.
Emily and Declan have an instant attraction to each other, but timing isn't on their side. With a marriage to save and a daughter to think about, Emily can't pursue anything with the hot Scottish forward. Declan on the flip side gets sidetracked by Cassandra a professional Wag. With their paths heading in opposite directions, will the attraction that they are fighting fizzle out? Or will it smoulder away like the last embers of a fire?
Another brilliant instalment in what has become a must read series for me. As I have already mentioned, Liz has made the subject matters and storylines so different in each book. The only thing that ties the stories together is of course the backdrop and Ms Crowe's unique way of weaving a story. As with all her books, this is real-life romance. Don't expect hearts and flowers, you have the wrong author (although expect the perfect amount of steam). This is about finding love and the joys, but also the problems that it can bring; especially when one person is married and the other has shit loads of personal baggage. The author delves deep with these characters and it isn't always pretty. It is however, honest true and life. And that is where the author's real talent lies. The way she explores every single orifice of a character and turns them into people that we feel true emotions towards.
I felt for Emily. She should be happy with her life. She has a rich, silver fox of a husband, everything money can buy and a beautiful daughter. But does she fully have Marcus's heart? And does she even want it? She is struggling with life and suddenly she has an attraction to a younger guy. Above everything though she is loyal and she will forget her own happiness to ensure the happiness of others.
Declan, you will have mixed feeling for him. I wanted to slap him so many times. It felt like he was so determined to settle down and find love that he turned a blind eye to the obvious. He has come to the U.S following the death of his fiancée and tries to forget his problems with a woman that is completely wrong for him. With the one woman he wants out of reach, he goes full speed ahead with Queen bitch and lives to regret his decisions down the line.
This book covers many sensitive subject matters, but it is done in an honest and real way. Life isn't always easy and we sometimes struggle with our decisions and the person we truly are. We often keep ourselves on a tight leash until people or situations break our defences, releasing the personality traits that we try to keep hidden and under control. This book is a journey for both Emily and Declan. They will both have their ups, and they will also have to deal with their downs. Will they do it together? You will just need to read and find out.
A fine example of real-life romance. If you enjoy your sports based romance and romance that doesn't follow the usual formula, this series and indeed author is a MUST READ!!
