Hard As It Gets (Hard Ink, #1) by Laura Kaye
Tall, dark, and lethal...
Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor.
Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick.
He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.
With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.
Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

Hard As It Gets was a real treat for me. It was the first ARC I have ever received in paperback, but not only that, it was officially handed to me by the wonderful lady herself. I was privileged to have met Laura Kaye at the London Signing on the 9th November and she had no reservations in handing me a copy to review - that in itself spoke volumes to me; how I didn’t bow down and kiss her feet I have no idea. I just knew that this would be my next big read and I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!
Hearts in Darkness remains one of my favourite novella’s of all time, so to dedicate myself to one of her full-length novels was a long time overdue! I couldn’t think of any better way than to start than with a debut series like this. ‘Hard As It Gets is everything I long for in a book. It incorporated every element that makes a good story work. It’s intelligent, with a faultless plot and great flow. The characters are strong, likable and most importantly, believable!
Becca Merritt is an ER Nurse with a problem. Her Brother is missing and all he left was a note: Find Rixey, Hard Ink Tattoo. The only other clue is that he once belonged to the Colonel’s team - her Father, who was killed in service a year ago with six of his men, in Afghanistan.
Upon meeting Mr Tall, Dark, Deadly... AND INKED, his standoffish demeanor makes her question the message from Charlie when it seems he is disinterested in helping the Daughter of Colonel Merritt - he has reasons of his own, ones that he is forbidden to disclose. It doesn’t help that Becca is beautiful and genuinely concerned about her Brother’s wellbeing. Alarm bells start to ring and Nick goes with his gut as he finally relents and secretly watches over her in the dark confines of her yard.
When Nick notices a shadow in her top window, he senses she is in serious danger, as he barges in, guns raised, duly saving her from the intruder. Charlie’s apartment has also been tossed and now it seems whoever has taken her Brother, wants Becca too.
The stakes are raised when Becca narrowly escapes another kidnap attempt, and Nick has no choice but to call in extra back-up. Its been a while since Nick Rixey was in the same presence as his fellow comrades; Shane, Beckett, Marz and Easy, and as expected, the reunion is anything but calm. When it appears that the colonel's family have been targeted due to some damning information that his computer hacker son may have uncovered, their interest in how it could affect them and their future takes precedent as the Brother band together once again as they fight to clear their name and rescue Charlie Merritt in the same process - the stakes have never been higher!
Becca is completely unaware of the hardships that these men have overcome, yet they are willing to help her and she has never been more grateful, but what should have been a clear case of search and rescue turns into a fight for survival when it becomes clear that Charlie is in the hands of a deadly underground crime ring. The need to protect becomes paramount as Nick and Becca start to share a mutual attraction that leads them into the bedroom. Desire is the easy part... the rest, including Love, is as hard as it gets...
To say this book compelled me from page one would be an understatement! I know I have said that before about other books, but this one seriously did a number on me from the word get-go. Nick, in all his full glory is a force to be reckoned with, but immediately you know he has a good heart. He is a hero that was judged harshly, shunned and dishonored unfairly and his anger gives him the drive he needs to see this one last mission through to the end. Yet, with Becca we watch him come out of those shadows as she shows him what it’s like to be apart of something special again...something real!
Becca Merritt is the perfect heroine. She is a real woman with a heart and mind so strong that she isn’t afraid to speak up in a room full of lethal testosterone. I was in awe of her determination and bravery, and not just in the case of her missing Brother, but in the case of her escalating feelings for Nick. She didn’t hold back to a fault and I felt that admirable considering the circumstances she found herself in.
This story is about survival and second-chances. It’s about uncovering unspoken truths and clearing the name of ‘A few good men.’ It’s about brotherhood, family and friendship. Yes, lust and love play a big part, but that isn’t all this book is about. This isn’t just another contemporary romance with a broken hero, this story is so much more than that.
Laura Kaye has delivered an exceptional story with honesty. It has an intensity that titillates without being ‘overdone.’ There are tears but no tantrums, just a dying need to get the job done with dedicated focus and determination.
The ending doesn’t have closure, just more questions. The plot has thickened giving us the lead-in for book two. Shane’s story is one I am very much looking forward to. In-fact, I CAN’T WAIT!
