Flawed Heart (House of Obsidian, #1)
By Bella Jewel
**This is a full length, second chance romance**
Max & Belle's story
This isn't the man I married.
The man I married was strong, beautiful and pure.
The man I married cherished our lives together.
The man I married loved me.
This...This isn't that man.
One night. One accident. It changes everything.
I wish I could tell you the exact moment he fell out of love with me. I wish I could tell you there was hope. That I hung on. That I fought. I wish I could tell you that we fixed it. That happily every after was just out of our grips.
It wasn't. I ran, in the dead of the night, I packed my things and I left him.
Now I'm back. He's still the same man. A deadly underground fighter for the House of Obsidian. He's still dangerous. He's still broken. I still love him.
This is the part where I'm supposed to turn around and run... But I don't.
Emma - 4 Crowns
Book 1 in the House of Obsidian series. Each book in this series will be stories that can be read as standalone's.
We first met Max and Anabelle in Desolation, the 4th and final book in the Jokers' Wrath MC series. Anabelle was introduced as Pippa's lodger, alongside her young daughter, Immy. It was clear that as a single mother she had a story to tell. It however became even more interesting when the estranged husband came into the picture. Belle (as she is also known) was such a sweet and loving friend and mother, whereas it was very apparent straight away that Max was much more dark and dangerous.
What brought these opposite characters together? What exactly drove them apart? Flawed Heart explores their story both past and present and in dual POV's.
Living back in the town she left 5 years ago, Belle has been forced to move back to be with her mother who has terminal cancer and has just months to live. She knows the chances of bumping into her estranged husband Max are there, she just doesn't know what she will say to him when and if they do. Belle has a secret. One that she has kept from the man who not only broke her heart, but who shattered it into a million pieces. Belle has a 4 year old daughter. A daughter she has had to deliver and bring up on her own. She is her world and she will protect her from the darkness that overtook the sweet man that she used to know, even if it breaks her heart even more.
Max lives in a world of violence, drinking and cheap women. The owner of the House of Obsidian club, he also runs underground fighting in its basement. He uses the fights to release the pent up emotions that have been drowning him for over 5 years. The demons and ghosts of his past refuse to go away and they have ultimately cost him everything in his life. They have changed him from the happiest man in the world to a man that has no optimism for his future. He is sad, he is lonely and he is filled with the pain of guilt and regret. The biggest regret being the loss of his Blue Belle. She remains the love of his life, but even she has the ability to evoke bitterness in him.
When they are thrown together, hurtful words will be thrown, blame will be placed and secrets will be revealed. When two people have been forced to change so much, can the love and connection remain? And if it can, can they learn to move on from the past?
I love Bella Jewel, that is no secret. I love her writing style, the fast pace she has you reading at, and the story lines she weaves together. I liked Flawed Heart, but unlike her other books I can't say I loved it. The premise of the story is a good one. It is in essence a second chance romance. I just found that although the storyline was good, it just lacked the depth I expect from Bella. It at times felt rushed and I just couldn't connect fully with the reasons for Max's treatment of Belle. It just didn't feel quite right. I don't know, it is hard to put a finger on it really.
I really liked the characters as a whole, but again I just found they lacked enough depth to make this book a Bella Jewel classic. At this point I could write more about Belle's lack of support for her husband and Max not wanting to share his hurt with a woman he is married to, but I won't as I would have to give spoilers which is a big no no for me. You will just have to read yourself and form your own opinions.
So did I love it... no, but I did like it. It was an easy and quick read and one that gives us closure on 2 characters that I had been intrigued about since Desolation. Book 2 will be Rainer's book, who again we met in Tyke and Pippa's book. I certainly look forward to his story, I just hope it delves further. This man doesn't just have a closet of skeletons, he has a whole damn house; I hope Bella uses his back story to its full potential.
A MUST READ for Bella Jewel fans, but one that maybe wasn't quite up to the 5 crowns I usually give this author.
