Damned (Four Horsemen MC, #3)
by Cynthia Rayne
Book 3 in the Four Horseman MC series. Although each book explores the relationship between a new couple, the back story is a continuation. For this reason, I recommend you read the books in the order in which they were written.
At the end of Hot as Hades (#2) I kind of guessed that we would get to see more of Rose, Daisy's younger sister and the girl that the MC rescued from the clutches of Kent - A lawyer with a sadistic sexual appetite. I was however really surprised with the object of her affections.
Rose is 19 years old and learning to live life free from the sexual dominance of her former captor. Welcomed in to Hell and the Four Horseman MC, she has become a natural at acting happy and fully recovered from her ordeal. Her sister Daisy is happy and in love, the last thing she wants to be is a burden. She is however, lonely. Scared that the horrors she was saved form will eventually sneak back up on her, her life is a never ending nightmare of the evil that was inflicted upon her.
Duke is a member of the Horseman but in name alone. Ex military, Duke is a loner and someone that doesn't work well with others. Recently released form a 5 year stretch inside, one of his first jobs back with his club was rescuing the sister of one of the clubs Old Ladies. From a distance he has watched Rose act as people expect, but Duke sees through it. Duke has his own demons and can relate to Rose more than anyone knows. At 39, he is old enough to be her dad, that alone should tell him to keep his distance. But Rose is different - but is she different enough for him to do the one thing he has never been able to?
This is a really good book and one that is a real departure from the other books in the series. Yes there is some club action, but the vast majority of the book focuses on Rose and Duke and the struggles they have fighting the demons of the past. It is a real slow burn of a romance and that really worked with the story subject matter. This is a couple that have an age gap of 20 years but who find solace in each others arms - even if one of them fights the feeling tooth and nail.
I always describe this series as being at the gentler end of the genre. However, I have to say that due to the sensitive topics covered you may want to think wisely before you proceed. If sexual abuse in any form is a trigger for you, then this might not be the book for you. I applaud Cynthia Rayne for tackling a subject that effects so many and for the sympathetic and believable way it is depicted.
A great addition to an enjoyable series. Now looking forward to Captain and Eddie's story but particularly Shep's... Love that guy!!
