Come To Me Quietly (Closer to you, #1) by A.L Jackson

Aleena Moore is content with her life. She has goals and dreams and an easy smile. She also has a secret she holds locked inside.

Jared Holt believes he doesn’t deserve to love or be loved. He destroys everything he touches. Haunted by the mistake that shattered his life, he’s fled from the memory of that pain.

Jared doesn’t know why he’s compelled to return, but finds himself drawn back to the place where it all began. The exact place where it ended. When he runs into his childhood best friend, Aleena’s older brother Christopher, he agrees to share Christopher and Aleena’s apartment while he looks for a place of his own.

Aleena is no longer the little girl Jared remembers from his past and evokes feelings in him he never wanted to feel again. Terrified of destroying her, he fights to keep her away. But her touch is something he can’t resist—the touch that sealed his fate.

Their pasts are intertwined and their futures uncertain. The only truths they know are the secrets they whisper in the night.

"I was smart enough to recognize when I was on dangerous ground. Everything about him was dangerous. Just as dangerous as he was beautiful. I'd witnessed firsthand the destruction that was Jared Holt. But there was no chance I could stay away." - Aleena Moore

"I ruin every fucking thing I touch, Aly, and I refuse to ruin you." - Jared Holt

Come to me Quietly is a deeply poignant story of friendship, loss, heartache and survival. It speaks of unbreakable bonds that form in early childhood - of hope, trust and second chances.

A young man swarmed with guilt and hatred due to a tragic event paves the way to self destruction. Jared cannot be saved. His body a canvas of past sins, his future laden with dark uncertainty.

Siblings, Aly and Christopher are his only link to the past, one he desperately seeks to forget. But sometimes, the past that you seek to run from has a way of catching up with you, as those who once loved the innocent, never forget and never let go.

Jared feels unworthy of their attentions as they struggle to rekindle the friendship they all once held so reverently - tainted, he destroys everything in his path and as much as he cares for this girl who is teaching him what it feels once more to belong, the self- destruct bomb continues to tick...

Jared broke my heart. His pain and internal suffering was palpable to the point that I could almost taste it. A.L Jackson is the Queen of emotional projection. Her words penetrate so fluently through your mind that they take hold, cocoon you within its walls so that the story becomes apart of you.

My heart hurt, my soul ached and yet my hope, my aid came in our heroine, Aly. You beautiful, selfless girl. The love for her broken best friend was pure, unyielding and tentative. Her manner innocent yet her voice strong, she is the embodiment of goodness and light. In a world where darkness prevails, Jared inhales and takes, her heavenly light a reprieve to the hell he lives through everyday.

A.L Jackson never fails me. Ever! In fact I would be inclined to say that up to this point, Come to me Quietly is my favourite book of hers. This story had a profound impact on me. Jared is one of the most tortured characters I have come across, his story just broke my heart and I wanted to reach out and hold him. Comfort him. His story, his pain became my pain and I had to see it through with him to the end.

Aly and Jared's story consumed me. This is a book you can devour in one sitting if you can dedicate the time, because trust me, you won't be able to put it down!

If you are a fan of Beautifully Damaged by L.A Fiore and Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire than I recommend you add this to your January TBR!

Book 1 in the Closer to you series.

Firstly I'd like to say that when I received this book, I was very excited. I love this author and particularly loved her Regret series. This is a very different book, but A.L Jackson didn't let me down at all.

This is Aleena and Jared's story, and what an emotional story it is.

Aleena is a 20 year old nursing student; living in her home city of Phoenix. Living with her older brother Christopher, she lives a quite sedate life. Aleena, or Aly as she is known, tends not to party too much and steers clear of any romantic relationships. She is 'sort of' dating Gabe, your typical Jock type, although she keeps him at arms length. We soon find out the reason that Aly is unable to emotionally commit and that is because she gave her heart away at 14 to Jared Holt; her brother's best friend and someone who was a important part of both her families and her life. Jared was her best friend and protector, he left under a grey cloud before she was able to admit her feelings for him. She has never been able to forget Jared and she often wonders what has become of him.

What will happen when he reappears in her life? Do her feeling still run deep?

Jared is 22 and has returned to Phoenix for reasons unknown to him. Having left when he was 16, he had a strong urge to return to the place where his life ended in the most tragic of circumstances. He is broken and damaged, but has no inclination to ease his suffering. Drinking in a bar, he bumps into his childhood best friend Christopher; who offers him a place to crash. He feels obliged to accept and heads over. His life is about to change though when in walks Aly. The gawky 14 years old has turned into a beautiful young woman and against his better judgement, he finds himself attracted to her on a deep emotional level. Jared damages and ruins all in his path, so he is determined that he will not infect this Angel with his poison. Some emotions are hard to control though and Jared faces the fight of his life. Aly is his trigger and life will never be the same again.

WOW!! This was an emotional book. The storyline at face value is that of a bad boy meets good girl; but this story is so much more.

Aly and Jared have such an inexplicable connection.

Aly is a quiet girl who fell in unrequited love at a young age with her brother's best friend. When he was banished from her life, it had a profound effect on her. She loves Jared and always has, she sees past the damaged man to the caring and loveable 16 year old and she is determined that in his own time, Jared rediscovers himself. She never pressures or rushes Jared and sees through the barriers he has erected. Aly is perfect for Jared, she just has to convince him of that.

Jared is a seriously messed up soul and I loved him. I don't think I have ever read about a character with such self loathing. He doesn't live, he exists. He's made mistakes in the past that destroyed his family and as he sees it his life. As far as he is concerned his life ended 6 years ago, he doesn't deserve love and certainly doesn't deserve someone as pure as Aly. He battles his connection with Aly out of both concern for Aly but also self preservation. As far as he is concerned he will ruin Aly and she will end up hating him when he destroys her. What he cannot control though are the emotions she evokes in him and the urge he has to imagine a future with her.

This is a seriously deep book for this type of genre, and I loved that about it. Most books of this type have the tendency to be light and fluffy, dare I say cheesy; NOT this book.

This is an emotional journey about kismet. It makes you believe that life is mapped out for you, that life leads you towards something or someone and you have no control over it.

The writing is superb and the author makes you feel every emotion that she has translated into these 2 complex characters that she has created.

If you LOVE A.L Jackson, you will LOVE this book. If you haven't read any books by this author, this is a fine example of the type of stories that she excels in telling. Love, sex, complex and difficult relationships and angst by the bloody bucket load.

It is a series but the ending won't leave you hanging; it leaves you just wanting to complete Jared and Aly's journey in the hope that Jared somehow finds his redemption and Aly gets her man.

This book is completely brilliant, heartbreaking, breathtaking, and unputdownable.

The story of Jared and Aleena "Aly" will captivate you and haunt you long after you're done reading.

Jared broke my heart and my soul....I just wanted to hug his pain away. Their journey is not to be missed. I cannot wait until the sequel.

This is not a cliffhanger -it's an HFN (Happy for now) I cannot wait to read more of their story.
