Bad Romeo (Starcrossed, #1)
by Leisa Rayven
When Cassie Taylor met Ethan Holt at acting school, sparks flew. She was the good girl actress. He was the bad boy about campus. But one fated casting choice for Romeo and Juliet changed it all. Like the characters they were playing, Cassie and Ethan's romance seemed destined. Until he broke her heart and betrayed her trust. Now the A-list heartthrob is back in her life and turning her world around. One touch at a time.
Cast as romantic leads once again, they're forced to confront raw memories of the heartbreaking lows and pulse-pounding highs of their secret college affair. But they'll also discover that people who rub each other the wrong way often make the best sparks
Book 1 in the Starcrossed series.
Cassie has made it. After years in an exclusive acting college and working on Broadway, she has now been cast as the lead in a show by a well respected director. She should be on top of the world, but its a little more complicated than that. Ethan Holt, huge stage star and the man who broke her heart and left her 3 years ago is cast opposite her and will play her lover. His presence alone brings back both good and bad memories, and when he makes it clear he is here to win her back, Cassie must decide whether she can ever trust the only man she has ever loved again.
This story is a journey through 2 points in time. In the present we learn that Cassie has struggled to move on from her first and only love; college sweetheart Ethan. She is a woman scorned and one that has been unable to find or connect with anyone since Ethan up'd and left her. On the flip side, Ethan's biggest regret is leaving Cassie behind and breaking her heart. He will do anything to win her back and opens old wounds to prove he is a reformed man.
We also travel back into the past. Learning about how their relationship began as 2 kids, eager to follow their passions and their dreams. Cassie is away from home and her overbearing parents, in Ethan she finds a boy that she has an unexplainable chemistry with. They become friends but it is very clear that although she may want more, Ethan wants to keep things platonic. He is a difficult person to be friends with and is obviously carrying around issues that make it hard for him to form emotional connections with other people. Cassie is determined though and they soon find their connection too hard to ignore.
This is such a brilliant book. Told only from Cassie's POV, I loved that the past is told in a journal style. It gives the story more of a trip down memory lane feel, it was necessary to the storyline and certainly didn't bog it down with a events that weren't of interest. The story itself is a complete angst filled journey but Cassie's voice is humorous, witty and lightens the feel of the book completely. As does the witty banter and dialogue between her and Ethan. To have a angst driven book combined with such humour is unique and very clever. It was perfectly balanced and made the book fast paced; I couldn't put the damn thing down.
I loved the 2 main protagonists. Cassie is just such fun. Innocent and with stars in her eyes, she continues to see the best in Ethan, even when he does his best to push her away. Ethan is your tortured soul. He pushes Cassie all the time, but he also warns her about his inability to give her anything as well; you cant help but respect him. As much as he is an arse at times, he will also make your heart flutter. I really hope he can mend Cassie's heart.
Be warned, you will finish the book and not all your questions will be answered. If you hate that then you may want to wait until Broken Juliet, book 2 is released in April. I however loved the ending. I love the fact that days later I am still thinking about the book, trying to answer the questions I have and wondering where the next book will take us.
A MUST READ romantic, angsty and humorous journey following 2 people destined for the bright lights of Broadway. An amazing debut novel (seriously... that shocks me!) by Leisa Rayven - Roll on April and Broken Juliet.
