A Pound of Flesh (A Pound of Flesh, #1)
by Sophie Jackson
I am so in love with this book. I am kissing the cover right now and hugging it like a precious newborn. Just so you know ladies, I'm just putting it out there... Wes Carter IS MINE! The writing, flow, plot and characterisation build up was beautifully sketched out and crafted in a way that you connect to the story immediately. Every scene pulled me in and I was loathe to escape. I would have quite happily starved to death if it wasn't for the fact my kids needed feeding too... Yes, this is that book! Give me a pack of Oreos and I would have been quite content.
A Pound of Flesh is an intense, addictive and sexually charged read with beautiful flow. The writing is faultless as the story builds to a satisfying crescendo that makes your heart melt and your toes curl.
Wes Carter is the proverbial bad boy. A man serving time for a crime in payment of a life debt. He may not have committed his current misdemeanour but he isn't new to the justice system.
In order to get granted early parole, Carter has to prove he is making an effort on the inside by taking up a course. After walking out on other subjects, his last ditch attempt is English Lit.
Kat Lane is learning to face her fears. After witnessing the murder of her Father at only nine, her way of turning that negative into a positive is helping those incarcerated find freedom in words. She is strong, professional and not easily swayed...that is until Wes Carter enters the fray.
Dangerous and insanely beautiful, he pushes her buttons like no other and its obvious their relationship is volatile from the offset. Knowing this is his last chance at freedom, Kat puts her concerns aside to help him, even going against her better judgement and jeopardising her career along the way, especially when the dynamics of their teacher/student relationship starts of shift when Kat starts to see Carter in a whole different light...
From prison to passionate forbidden love affair, A Pound of Flesh is everything I long for in a book. The flow was slow building which gave great insight to the characters. I loved the scene structure and how the relationship blossomed on a realistic level.
Carter is a beautiful broken alpha. He knows what he wants but he's also petrified of taking it. Never knowing love in any form, the idea of having a relationship is foreign to him and dangerous to those he calls enemy.
Family dramas, pasts that haunt and dangerous love is a theme, and my goodness, what a knock out read. I loved this book, and I love Wes Carter! Definitely a top 2015 book boyfriend contender.

Book 1 in the Pound of Flesh series.
This is the story of a good girl and a bad boy... or is it? Some things aren't always as they seem. Sometimes you need to look deeper, submerge yourself fully and take risks that could destroy you. But sometimes those risks can turn in to the biggest rewards... this is Kat and Wes's story.
Kat is still not over the murder of her Senator father 16 years ago. In a move to get past the nightmares and lingering fears that still plaque her, she takes a job at the local prison, teaching English Literature. Against the wishes of her friends and most notably her mother, Kat starts to really enjoy the work and the inmates that she is teaching. That is until she meets the prison, and heck, all round bad boy Wes; or Carter as he is known to his friends. What she doesn't know at this point is that this man will bring a pivotal shift in her life. Where past meets present and where attraction turns to deep, spine tingling love.
Wes Carter is paying his pound of flesh in a prison cell. He has long been in trouble alongside his best friend Max, but is he bad to the bone or just misunderstood. When he is forced to take a class to help his parole application, he finds himself faced with a ghost of his past. Beautiful, giving and not intimidated by him in the slightest. She will be his saving Grace, his past, his hope and his future all rolled into one.
Both these characters have serious baggage with both family, friends and the past. They are both stuck in a lift that is going neither up nor down, until they meet each other. They both know the risks but they are inexplicably drawn to each other and are unable to stop the gradual deepening of their relationship. They face the the wrath of the prison service, of friends, of family, but together they are strong and they can face everything that is thrown at them... or can they? I will leave you to find that out yourself.
Firstly... WTF!! Seriously, this is a début novel. Secondly... What a beautiful and atmospheric book. The writing is flawless and just beautiful. The words dance across the page and suck you into the story and the lives of these two very different, but perfectly fitted characters. The depth and choice of words and phrasing is unexpected from a newbie and I am seriously bowled over by the talent that Sophie Jackson has.
A fantastic début novel from an extremely talented new storyteller. You will get lost in this story and the beautiful connection between these two gorgeous characters. I now look forward to book 2, Max's story. I had mixed feelings about him throughout this book, but by the end I just wanted him to find his happy. A MUST READ romance from the new British author on the block!
